Pogroms were used to extend this plunder to the cities

The international powers have long nurtured the notion that Sri Lanka is a ‘friendly democratic state’.  Maybe they even believe that Sri Lanka’s democracy will eventually emerge from its ‘Tamil problem’ to be the true model democracy they so ardently desire it to be.  

Certainly the actions of aid agencies, human rights groups, foreign media and governments reflect the belief that Sri Lanka should be given all the support to strengthen its democratic state – in spite of all Tamil protestations of genocide.

The problem is that the Sinhalese-led state has been the British Empire’s favourite child for so long now that it will take a lot for Western powers to realise that this state is as much driven by a nasty belief in ‘Aryan racial supremacy’, as was the (also ‘democratically’ elected) Nazi state.  

This means the same arguments we have used so often before about ‘Tamil rights denied’ will not simply change that perception.  Just by us repeating these arguments louder, more often, or through more voices, it won’t change the Western aspiration for a beautiful Sinhalese democracy.  All that has happened is that Westerners have hardened their hearts on hearing these phrases of ours – we, not the Sinhalese rulers, have been seen as the aggressors against democracy.  

How do we change that?  We can only change ourselves, what we do.  If we change, the world changes in response to us.  We need to think more clearly about what we are expressing, and how we are expressing it.  

மாமனிதர் சிவராம் பற்றி, சோமிதரன் எழுதும் தொடரை படிக்கும் போது, அவரது இழப்பு ஈழத்தமிழ் ஊடகத்துறைக்கு, எத்தகைய பாதிப்புகளை ஏறபடுத்தியிருக்கிறது என்பதை உணரக்கூடியதாக இருக்கிறது. உண்மையில் சிவராமின் முக்கியத்துவம் வெகுவாகக் குறைத்தே மதிப்பிடப்படுகிறது. அதற்கு அவர் தமிழீழ மக்கள் விடுதலைக்கழகத்தில் (புளொட்)  இணைந்திருந்த போது மேற்கொண்ட சில நடவடிக்கைகள் காரணமாக இருக்கலாம். அவரது தனிப்பட குணவியல்புகள், அல்லது அவர் மீது கொண்ட தொழிற்துறைசார்ந்த பொறாமை, காழ்ப்புணர்வு எனப்பல காரணங்கள் இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் ஒரு ஊடகவியலாளனாக, அதுவும் தனது இனத்தின் மீது பற்றுறுதி கொண்ட ஒரு தமிழ்தேசியவாதியாக அவரிடம் நாம் நிறைளையன்றி, எவ்வித குறைகளையும் காணமுடியாது.

ஐ.எம்.எப் என்கிற சர்வதேச நாணய நிதியம் சிறிலங்காவிற்கு 2.6 பில்லியன் அமெரிக்க டொலர் கடனுதவியை வழங்க முன்வந்துள்ளது. இக்கடனுதவி பகுதி பகுதியாக வழங்கப்பட இருப்பதாகவும், அதன் முதற்பகுதியாக 322 மில்லியன் டொலர் உடனடியாக வழங்கப்படவிருப்பதாகவும் மேற்படி நிறுவனம் வெளியிட்டுள்ள செய்திக்குறிப்பில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

பண்டையகாலத்தில், மன்னர்கள் எதிரிநாட்டின் மீது போர் தொடுத்து வேற்றுநாட்டு மக்களை அடிமைகளாகச சிறைப்பிடித்துவருவது போல், வன்னியில் போர் நடைபெற்ற பிரதேசங்களிலிருந்து, மூன்று இலட்சம் தமிழ் மக்கள் பிடித்து வரப்பட்டு முகாம்களில் தடுத்து வைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். அவர்கள் தங்களது சொந்த இடங்களிற்கு செல்வதற்கு சிறிலங்கா அரசு இப்போதைக்கு அனுமதிக்கும் அறிகுறிகள் தென்படவில்லை.

உலக வரலாற்றில் இத்தகையவோர் பின்னடைவு வேறு எந்தத் தேசிய இனத்தின் விடுதலைப் போராட்டத்திலும் ஏற்படவில்லை.  ஏற்படவும் கூடாது. பஞ்சாபில் காலிஸ்தான் தீவிரவாதிகள் அடக்கியொடுக்கப்பட்டர்கள் ஆனாலும் அவர்களுக்கென ஆளும் அரசொன்றிருக்கிறது.  அதற்கும் மேலாய் இந்திய நடுவண் அரசின் பிரதம மந்திரியாகவே சீக்கியர் ஒருவர் நியமிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறார்.  ஆனால் எத்தனையோ பிரமிக்கத்தக்க தியாக வேள்விகளைச் செய்து தமிழ்த் தேசியத்தைக் கட்டியெழுப்பிய நமக்கோ ஒரு பிடி மண்தானும் நமதென்று சொல்லிக்கொள்ளக் கிடைக்கவில்லை.  எல்லாமே பொய்யாய்க் கனவாய் புனைகதையாய்ப் போய்விட்டது.  

My friends Tun and Zibi were lucky to have a good weather day for their well planned wedding.  Tun is a Tamil from Burma and Zibi is a Jew, born in London.  Both of them are naturalists, concern more on global warming and green house effects.  They are worried about the deterioration of nature and its environmental sustainability and thus, they wanted to have their wedding in an absolutely natural environment.
