Mr Poopalapillai Sangaravel

Veteran civil servant and renowned social worker Poopalapillai Sangaravel, former Additional Government Agent of Batticaloa is remembered with gratitude for his committed, relentless and yeoman service to the people of the Eastern Province for a long time.

Born on 13th June 1929 at Periyakallaa’ru in Batticaloa, Mr. Sangaravel had his early education at Sivananda Vidyalayam, Batticaloa. He later went to study at Jaffna Central College from where he entered the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya, and graduated in Agriculture.

He became a member of the Ceylon Administrative Service, the predecessor of today’s SLAS and served as District Land Officer in the Trincomalee, Vavuniya and Mannaar districts before becoming the Additional Government Agent of Batticaloa. For short spells he also worked as Additional GA at Puththa'lam and as Deputy Director in the Ministry of Finance and Development.

As Secretary of the University College, Batticaloa, in its incipient days between 1983 and 1986, his contribution to develop it as the Eastern University of Sri Lanka is very well remembered and appreciated.
He was coordinator for UNDP in the NorthEast Province when the provincial administration was created and left it due to compelling situations in 1990 to settle in UK.

When he left Sri Lanka he availed his houses for the use of a charity organization for the blind, called Tharisanam.

“The problem is, Karnanishi symbolises Tamil, the rhetoric. The tragedy of Tamil Nadu is, as I look at it as a student of Tamil literature and as a Marxist, there has been a  de-ideolgisation of politics. As a Marxist I would say that the basic problem was that the Dravidian ideology was not shaped in terms of economics”

அறுபது ஆண்டு கால திராவிட இயக்கத்தின் செயற்பாட்டு அரசியல் தொடர்பான தனது விமர்சனத்தில் பேராசிரியர் சிவத்தம்பி மிக முக்கியமான குற்றச்சாட்டை முன்வைக்கிறார், அதாவது தலித் மக்களின் பொருளாதார விடிவை உறுதிப்படுத்துப்படுத்தும் விதமாக நில உரிமை தொடர்பான காத்திரமான சீர்திருத்தம் எதனையும் திராவிட இயக்கங்கள் அமுல்ப்படுத்தவில்லை என்பதே அவரது குற்றச்சாட்டாகும்.

இலங்கைத்தீவின் இனப்பிரச்சனை விடயத்தில் வெளிப்படையாகத் தலையிடுவதனை தவிர்த்து வந்த இந்தியா, தனது அணுமுறையில் மாற்றத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளமையை அவதானிக்க முடிகிறது. இதனை உறுதிப்படுத்தும் வகையில் இந்திய மத்திய அரசின் அதிமுக்கிய அதிகாரிகளான, பாதுகாப்பு ஆலோசகர் எம்.கே. நாராயண், வெளிவிவகாரச் செயலாளர் சிவ்சங்கர் மேனன், பாதுகாப்புச் செயலாளர் விஜய் சிங் ஆகியோரின் அண்மைய கொழும்புப் பயணம் அமைந்திருக்கிறது. கொழும்பில் இவர்கள் சிறிலங்கா சனாதிபதி இராஜபக்ச, தமிழ் தேசியக் கூட்டமைப்பினர், சிறிலங்கா அரச ஆதரவுத் தமிழ்க் குழுக்கள் எனப் பலரையும் சந்தித்து பேச்சுவார்த்தைகள் நடாத்தியிருக்கிறார்கள்.
