Let us look for the answer to the simple question, after all, what is the destructive element blocking a solution to the ethnic problem? The undisputed answer is, “Sri Lanka is a Sinhala Buddhist country…, which has been bestowed only to the Sinhalese. Tamils are aliens, but if they want to…, they could live under the Sinhala yoke”.
Always, LTTE to Get the Blame
Ever since the 2002 ceasefire was signed, the LTTE has been under pressure to make concession in return for a relatively minor role in any political settlement. The imperialistic major powers have been arm twisting the LTTE while assisting the Sri Lanka military. They never failed to brand LTTE as intransient, though the LTTE put forward an alternative to separate state, ISGA and again in his “Heroes day” speech of 2005, Pirapaharan warned in no uncertain terms that the LTTE would be forced to resume the struggle for “self-determination” in 2006, unless progress towards a satisfactory political solution was made. Though it is customary for oppressors to come down on their demands, here, the reverse has taken place.
The Nation…Tamil Eelam
Tamils are ever sentimentally attached to the concept of a Tamil Nation. The Sinhalese are not ignorant of this. Seasoned columnists of Colombo press, like Suranimala, Gamini Weerakoon and Tisaranee Gunasekara have hinted this in their writings.
Tamils should not rest in the naive notion that, if the state fails to defeat the LTTE then it will be compelled to negotiate with the Tamils. The Tamil National Leader Pirapaharan with his gallant fighters cannot be expected to go on and on. Of course we have to brace ourselves for an even more brutal military onslaught in the time to come. The international community by its designed actions and inactions has made it clear now, that any rights the Tamils secure depend entirely on the outcome on the battlefield. Tamils that dare to keep their heads above their shoulders are well aware of the consequences that could arise if we fail to grasp any timely opportunity.
A de-facto state for the Tamils under the LTTE has been in existence for more than a decade. Queensland Paediatrician, Dr John Whitehall, talking with Richard Fiddler of ABC radio, said that in Tamil Eelam there "is tremendous commitment from a population of only three million people [for separation]. You can't get 17000 people to take up arms and fight to death unless their hearts are in their cause,” He also said, “ There have been more than 17,000 deaths of soldiers in their military wing. I have been to many of these cemeteries. That is tremendous commitment from a population of only three million people. You can't get 17000 people to take up arms and fight to death unless their hearts are in their cause”.
India and Tamil Eelam
Naturally the Tamils would love to see the state of Eelam a strong ally of India in defence and trade. It is a well known truth that India is surrounded by hostile neighbours. China already established a lookout post on the Burma coast opposite Andaman. All these show that India needs a true friend whatever the size, in the region. Tamil Struggle has been always for a solution which is in harmony with India’s national interest. But unfortunately the Indian Government never had the knack of reading it, mainly due to the arrogance, egoism and vengeance of bureaucrats like M. K. Narayanan, the National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister of India and others like B. Raman, who had the audacity to say, “The SLAF has valid reasons to target Prabakaran. If the Sri Lankan authorities conclude that he has to be eliminated in order to stop the bloodshed, nobody can question their right to undertake a decapitation strike. UDI- Unilateral Declaration of Independence
It is high time that Tamils declared UDI. A declaration of independence is an assertion of the independence of an aspiring state, usually declared from part or all of the tertiary of another nation or failed nation, or are breakaway territories from within the larger state. There cannot be any qualms. The growing statistics of daily civilian causalities amply prove beyond any aorta of doubt that this war conducted by the army is a genocide war against the Tamils. The draconian Emergency Regulations give cover and impunity for unlawful arrest, abduction, torture, and killing and disposal of bodies without investigations. On the continuing alienation of Tamil citizens from the State, Prof Uyangoda, a Sinhalese himself, concludes, "the message the Tamil citizens have got from the government is that the government treats each Tamil – young or old, man or woman, sick and able bodied – as a potential and imminent threat to the Sri Lankan state and its security, unless that Tamil is a supporter, well-wisher or participant in the government’s counter-insurgency war. Tamils are too busy to waste any more time. Tamils have faced the worst; there can be anything worse than the present plight. They don’t need any sympathy.
. Not all Declarations of independences are successful. But Tamils of Eelam are not orphans. We have so many supporters and well-wishers who understand and support our struggle. They only need space and platforms. There are more than 800 thousands expatriates, not to mention the Tamils in large numbers living in other countries. There is our Tamil Nadu.
South Africa and Tamils
There are more than one million Tamils in South Africa having clout with the ruling ANC. This is what an enthusiast from Eastern Cape, wrote in response to an news item appeared in the Sunday Times in February, 2004, “I am extremely proud to be an ANC member and South African 3rd generation Tamil from Ilankai (Ceylon) because of our own Freedom Struggle, we are in a position to support Liberation Struggles elsewhere in the world, like Palestine, Iraq and yes, the Freedom struggle in the North and East, the homeland of Tamils in Sri Lanka. I believe that the LTTE is here to learn and share our experiences. Let us propagate the true challenges that Madiba (or Nelson Mandela) and the brave Rivonia 6 taught us. Viva the LTTE, Viva ANC”. This is the sprit in that country and one can count on more than half a dozen of African countries who will follow South African moves.
Tamils and China
.
China will definitely seize the opportunity and recognize the nation of Tamil Eelam. In the sixties, our elders can remember how N.Shanmuganathan and V. Ponnampalam, the members of the China communist party, who were active and had so many followers. They made frequent travels to People’s China. China moves steadily and slowly and is well aware of the game of the Sri Lankan Buddhist Leaders. China needs Indian Ocean and needs it urgently. Simply, China is well aware that the LTTE represents the aspirations of the Tamils.
Other than the mentioned countries, there are many third world countries and the ones with no good relation with the USA, will definitely do their bit. Tamils living abroad with their trusted friends can do the necessary lobbying.
If so, then ‘The Ultimate Scenario’.
The USA, India, Japan and the so called Co-Chair will learn a hard lesson, the price they pay for their covet support to the governments of Sri Lanka. India will be in a very awkward position. If China was the Sun, India is the snow, we all know. India deserves it. Tamils, the Diaspora, and the others will beat each other trying to help our kith and kin. The writer suggested UDI in the Oru Paper before the Great Hero’s Day, last year.
Then it was faint and soft, this time it is, ‘Loud and Clear’.
